Place the bird's cage in a light, airy room, but do not put it in a
window or in direct sunlight. Make sure that it is out of draughts and
away from damp.
The popular habit of hanging the bird cage outside the
house is dangerous. Strong direct sun or fresh winds are both harmful to
these little birds, and butcher birds have been seen to attack the cage,
injuring the budgerigar if they can get at it or killing it through
fear.
If the budgerigar appears to be at all timid, give it a couple of quiet
days to settle in when you first bring it home. Just talk to it quietly
from time to time and occasionally drop a few choice seeds into the cage
near it. Do not attempt to stroke it, or put your finger into the cage
during the first 48 hours. If you take things gently at first you will
find that the bird will later accept your overtures without fear.
If your budgerigar appears to be nervous and flutters around the cage
a great deal, cover all but one side of the cage with a dark cloth. This
allows the bird to see what is going on in the room without too much
distraction.
 Budgie Baths
Budgerigars love a bath and your pet
will thoroughly enjoy itself if you place a shallow dish of water
somewhere convenient for it to splash about in. If you place a small
handbag mirror at the bottom of the dish, your budgerigar will enjoy its
bath all the more. Birds need to preen their feathers for good health.
This keeps them shiny and well, and allowing the budgerigar to get its
feathers wet is a certain way of making it preen itself.
